The Truth About Natural Skincare: Not All Products Are Created Equal
“Natural” has become one of the most overused words in skincare. It sounds safe, gentle, and eco-friendly — but that isn’t always the case.
Plenty of products marketed as “natural” still contain harsh ingredients, unsustainable materials, or irritants that can leave skin feeling worse for wear. The truth is, not all natural ingredients are kind, and not all kind ingredients are strictly “natural.”
So, what should you really be looking for?
Natural Doesn’t Always Mean Gentle
Some of the harshest substances in skincare are technically natural — essential oils, exfoliants, clays, even certain plant extracts can all irritate the skin when used incorrectly.
That doesn’t mean they’re bad ingredients — just that context matters. How something is sourced, balanced, and formulated makes all the difference.
At Hollow Oak, we believe “natural” should mean thoughtfully made. Our soaps are formulated for real skin — using ingredients that cleanse gently and support the skin’s natural balance, not overwhelm it.
What “Natural” Should Mean
For us, natural includes both plant-based and sustainably sourced animal ingredients — things like shea and mango butter, clays, beeswax, honey, and (soon) tallow. These are raw, recognisable materials that the skin understands.
We choose them for their performance and provenance — not marketing appeal.
And while palm oil is natural, we don’t use it because of its environmental cost: large-scale palm production drives deforestation and endangers species like orangutans. Instead, we focus on ingredients that are kind to both skin and the planet.
We also steer clear of SLS, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, which can be harsh or drying — even if they appear in products branded as “natural.”
Greenwashing: When “Natural” Becomes a Buzzword
Walk down any skincare aisle and you’ll see endless green labels and leafy logos — but a quick glance at the ingredients tells another story.
A brand can use one natural ingredient and still market itself as “100% natural.” It’s called greenwashing, and it’s surprisingly common.
If the label doesn’t list full ingredients or relies on vague terms like “botanical blend” or “nature-inspired,” that’s usually a sign it’s more style than substance.
Transparency matters — you should always be able to see exactly what’s inside.
Simple, Honest Skincare
Our skin doesn’t need complicated formulas — it just needs care that works with it.
That’s why our soaps, like the Unscented Beeswax, Honey & Oats Soap, are made with gentle, proven ingredients that cleanse, soothe, and protect.
Each bar is handmade in Devon using beeswax and honey from our own hives, and cold-processed in small batches to retain natural glycerin.
If you prefer a natural essential oil scent, try the Lemongrass Soap — fresh, clean, and naturally uplifting without synthetic perfume.
Eco-Friendly Inside and Out
Being natural means more than what’s inside the bar. It’s also about how it’s packaged and produced.
All Hollow Oak soaps come in plastic-free, recyclable kraft boxes, made with sustainability in mind from start to finish.
So when you choose one, you’re not just treating your skin — you’re choosing a cleaner, more responsible way to care for it.
Final Thoughts
“Natural” isn’t a guarantee of quality, safety, or kindness — but it can be when it’s done right.
At Hollow Oak, every ingredient has a reason to be there: for your skin, your conscience, and the environment. Because for us, natural isn’t a label — it’s a promise.
